In many cases, public relations strategies and tactics can produce better results than traditional advertising or marketing. Studies show most people are skeptical about claims made in ads. That’s not to say advertising doesn’t work; it does, as long as you know when and how to leverage advertising to promote and reach your goals.

Public relations, PR, can help your company capture media attention that is far more credible and convincing than ads. Research also shows people tend to believe information they read in print and Web articles from credible sources. When your company leaders are quoted in a story, or your products or services are highlighted in an article, it creates an “implied endorsement.”

An implied endorsement means the reporter who wrote the article identified your company as a reputable source of information that will benefit or inform readers, viewers or listeners. This implied endorsement can create a lot buzz about your business in your marketplace and community. And that buzz can translate into business opportunities with current and new clients.

How we capture great PR
My firm organized and launched a PR strategy for The Cardinal’s Nest. This non-profit group provides respite services for parents with children who have various types of disabilities.

Leaders of the Cardinal’s Nest needed to increase the awareness of their valuable service throughout Greater Cleveland. The group also wanted to attract new parents and supporters.

We developed an interesting and newsworthy angle in the lead of the press release, which helped capture extensive media coverage including a front-page feature story in Sunday’s Plain Dealer that is read by more than 1 million people throughout Ohio. The story also appeared on the PD’s Web site, giving the group  national exposure as well.

What’s more, The Cardinal’s Nest landed coverage with suburban dailies, weekly newspapers and other news outlets throughout Greater Cleveland reaching hundreds of thousands of people. This PR strategy generated tremendous awareness about the group, enhanced its reputation and attracted new parents to enroll for the service. The Cardinal’s Nest also received financial and volunteer supporters.
